ati catalyst 3.8 driver/call of duty conflict
for all you ati videocard users out there planning on buying call of duty, there seems to be a conflict with ati's latest drivers (v3.8) that will cause call of duty to crash at random times without any warning. a fix until ati releases new drivers is to roll back to v3.7. or go out and buy an nvidia card. thanks goes out to ledzep for figuring this out.

Yea, go buy an Nvidia card, so you can have hardware in your machine that doesn’t support the best new games. Great idea. Read HardOCP and you’ll see that Nvidia is just trying to basically squeeze all the money it can WHILE it can out of it’s customer base.
I’d take a driver rollback to inferior design any day.
Thanks for the advice.

Poor ATI. Why is it that its the year 2003 almost 2004 and ATI still can’t get drivers right?!?!?!? I remember when I bought my ATI Rage PRO and got rid of it because of driver issues and bought a voodoo and ATI still having probs. Get rid of your ATI’s and buy a Voodoo card for all you people who dont want to admit that Nvidia can atleast run a game =)

I never said that Nvidia can’t run games. I would like to point out that they don’t run them very efficiently however. And if you’ll scroll down the page a bit, you’ll see that Nvidia also has driver issues. Hell, everyone has driver issues at some point. The base hardware is the bone of my contention. The newest cores from ATI and Nvidia are not comparable. What I can’t stand is the blind loyalty to a product, regardless of performance and reviews.
And…. Voodoo? WTF? Voodoo is NOT competitive with anything anymore. Are you still thinking back to the last time your site was updated or something? That’s about the last time Voodoo had any real pull on 3d gaming. Next you’ll be telling me to buy a Matrox Parahelia.

i’m using a geforce 4 ti and haven’t had any problems so i can’t recommend any tweaks to fix it. some suggestions are
1. if the latest video drivers aren’t working for you, you may have better luck rolling back to a previous version.
2. there is a call of duty 1.3 patch coming any day now. hopefully it may fix issues with your card. you can grab a beta version from http://www.planetcallofduty.com.. (it’s a beta so install at your own risk)
3. check out the call of duty forums on planet call of duty and see if anybody else is having the same problem. they may have found a fix/workaround.
4. worst case scenario: add your name to this petition (http://www.petitiononline.com/PBNvidia/petition.html). there have been reports that the latest version of punkbuster and games using the quake 3 engine are incompatible. astrozombie has created this petition to call attention to this issue in the hope of having it resolved by even balance and nvidia.
